I too have old books. One of the earlier is "Stoddard's letter" which I have seen all over. The issue for me with these early books is that they contain mostly images of ruins and famous old palaces. I wish they had taken more images of people and actual happening because the look of the Roman ruins did not change much in the last 100 years

There was nothing about the Tuscia/Bolsena/Viterbo area when I arrived here 25- 30 years ago... now its pulsating with on line stuff, mostly in Italian, as I say in my video interview "it was virgin territory " -you can watch the interview on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ehY3YyZRfg

I always enjoy reading your posts but this last one is also a good source that I should thank you. Being a "collector" myself - specially about Rome. My latest acquisition "Roma in Castigo" by Fabrizio Sarazani, 1959. I hope you know it, not as good as "Roma non basta una vita" by Silvio Nero.

Oh Dear, I never published yet. For many reasons. One important one I read somewhere that we should have a main subject - but I don't or worse not sure if I want to write only about work or about my research on metagenealogy. More important also I am insecure about the quality of my work 🙂 . However I was charmed by you book collection and I enjoy reading your page.

I too have a collection of mostly Italian travel guides, ranging from the 1904 Baedeker Central Italy and Rome, the first English edition of the Michelin guide to Italy published in 1904 along with many other books. One of the more interesting is an Italian guide to Italian East Africa published in 1938 and dedicated to King Victor Emmanual III and Mussolini.

I've been updating Fodor's Rome guidebook for a few years now, but I would love to see what the original book looked like and what it included!

Love that cheapskate guide cover--wow! Reminds me a little of of Ludwig Bemelmans book that I have-- I'm a huge Bemelmans fan. Your library is one of the wonders of Italy!
