Very nice article... greatly enjoyed reading it. I recently semi-retired and now live on the shores of the lake. The restaurant with the deck is La Tramontana ... my family has been coming here since the 60s.
Thanks for this piece. I'm about to start featuring letters on my substack by a Duchess of Bracciano. Marie-Anne de La Trémoille, the daughter of a French duke, was married to Prince Flavio Orsini, Duke of Bracciano. She is remembered in France as the Princesse des Ursins (des Ursins = Orsini). She was widowed in 1698. How interesting to read here that the castle came into the hands of the Odescalchi in 1696. The Duke was known to be strapped for cash, so now I wonder -- if indeed he was in possession as of 1696 -- whether he was constrained to sell it. I see a rabbit hole opening under my feet...
Fascinating story! Definitely want to make a trip there this spring. And even a train from San Pietro— it’s perfect!

I always love reading about the area north of Rome where we spent so many happy weekends.
Fantastic, Mary Jane. Oh, do I wish I were there.
